I was talking about the value of tradition and the situation of martial arts nowadays. Recently people care more about lineages and styles instead of thinking in terms of actual skill, quality and effective methods. We can learn so much from the past but we shouldn't forget to live in the present.

I was working on translations and I came upon a piece written by Wang Xuan Jie:

“作为习武者,师兄棒,师父棒,师爷棒不如自己棒。我尊重先人,尊重同道,同时一贯主张厚古薄今不如厚今薄古,武林旧习,也应改革,只有这样才能一代比一代更有出息。”

"As a martial practitioner, I should not spend too much energy thinking about how good my martial brother, my master, the master of my master is. I should think more about how good I am. I respect the ancestors and respect my peers. But at the same time, I have always advocated that we should focus on today rather than dwelling in the past, the old habits of the martial arts world need to be reformed. Only in this way we can have one generation better than the other”.
